WEBSITE DESIGN

Ready for your first website? To avoid disappointment, keep these 4 tips in mind:

  1. Cross-platform: Your website must be viewable on all platforms, be it computers or mobile devices.
    • Beware of Flash technology - websites will look incomplete on Android devices (most smart phones and tablets) and Apple computers and devices (your upper-middle to upper income market).
  2. Navigation: Users must be able to easily find what they're looking for, either on your home page or with one click.
  3. Search engines: Users must find your website on Google, preferably on the first page.
    • Beware of spammers claiming to list your site on thousands of search engines - Google will penalise you, and at best, the campaign will be ineffective.
    • Make sure your web designer knows to both optimise your site's contents (and invisible meta tags), as well as get popular, related websites to link to you.
    • Again, beware of Flash files for navigation - Google can't read it.
  4. Ownership: The website and web address must be yours to own and you should be free to change web designers or hosts.
    • Beware of dirt cheap design fees - the designer will own your site (and/or web address), and in the long run it will cost you far more.

AlternaFruit exotic fruits exporter

Example of website design

AlternaFruit, an exotic fruit exporter, had a corporate identity and brochure, but wanted a website that would reflect the feel of their brochure.

AlternaFruit is related to Paarl exporter Fruits Unlimited (owned by Riël Malan).

Each page had its own unique colour. Both Konrad and the client were very happy with the result. It was catchy and tasty.

Riël Malan (musician)

Example of website design

Riël Malan is a musician who started a career in rock as a sideline to his highly successful Paarl fruit exporting business, Fruits Unlimited, but now boasts a record contract to boot. And he still runs his daytime business.

His website has that smart look – the background is pitch black with a minimalist, striking foreground. Simplicity is the key.

Ad Hoc Projects & Construction

Detail of website design

Bernado Oosthuizen asked Konrad to design him a website for his small construction company based in Sea Point, Cape Town.

Because the company is "intimate" and aims at higher end clients, we decided to give it the white space treatment, with subtle, light grey gradients and orange links, cause it's just damn beautiful.

An important part of the design is the animated logo, with building blocks traveling upwards to construct the logo.

Rode & Associates Property Consultants

Detail of website design

A news site and online brochure, the Rode & Associates website is a gateway to the largest property economist in South Africa, Rode's research publications and valuations service. The News area was created to attract clients to the site.

In its previous incarnation, we designed it as an e-commerce website, but this function was shelved after a few years due to the high cost of secure electronic transactions at the time.

Assegai water-based lubricant

Example of web page design

Tatt2 is a company based in Observatory, Cape Town that specialises in the manufacture of a sex lubricant called Assegai. Konrad thought the name's quite funny – its main market was gay men but it was later expanded to everyone.

We were asked to put up a low-cost, single web page for the launch of their first product. This was an urgent request and the page was not intended for further expansion. The Assegai logo and several design elements were taken from designs the client already had.

Ad Space Special Offer!

Example of e-mail designRode & Associates Property Consultants' original and most popular publication, the quarterly Rode's Report, is the only publication of theirs still available in trusty old print format (vs. PDF), and as such has advertising space available.

This e-mail was an announcement about a limited offer on advertisement placing.

Riakona Recruitment

Example of website design

Riakona is a Johannesburg based search firm, specialising in IT personnel and those in the financial industry. We designed their logo for them based on the feel of the logo for an earlier project of theirs, M-Assignments.

The website was a real pleasure to do - when you have control over a company's corporate identity, you really can put your heart into the web design process. Clean, white, with orange elements – orange being Konrad's favourite colour (besides green, for foliage only).

Creative website design

Rode Graphics

Example of website design

Our previous website. Quite a feat, considering the wild design of the site. It was labour intensive getting all those elements to work in mark-up code. The site you're looking at has since replaced this old one, to keep things simple, to the point and easier to update.

You can still view the website design live.

Tabankulu Addictions Recovery Centre

Example of website design

This was an online brochure for a care centre for patients suffering from various addictions such as drug addiction, eating disorders, gambling addictions etc., situated in Kommetjie, Cape Town.

Too many web designers tend to go for flashy, screaming websites, not realising it often repels visitors and looks cheap.

This web design became one of our favourites, with its clean, white spaces and smooth, calm buttons. No frills, yet beautiful. The Zen feel, we call it.

Website design

Medis Medical orthopaedics distributor

Example of website design

The goal of the website was to simply have their list of products available on demand, as well as their contact details.

One of the benefits of online brochures – as opposed to printed brochures – is financial savings. To make a change to the brochure may cost as little as an hour of the web designer's time, compared to the massive printing costs involved in printing and the cost of delivery, be it postal or by hand.

Of course, there's also the time factor. A change can be made available within a day on the Web, but in print, this can take several days, if not weeks when taking into account that the brochure still has to be delivered to (prospective) clients.

E-mail design

Product launch invite

Example of e-mail designProperty research firm Rode & Associates launched a new research publication at a cocktail party at the V&A Waterfront, called Rode's Growth Points – a tool aimed at property investors. We designed the HTML e-mail for the announcement.

The great thing about e-mail design is that unlike most web pages, you can break the rules. For instance, you don't always have to use real text, because the e-mail isn't going to be indexed by Google etc. So, one can have absolute control over the design, by using any typefaces or layouts you wish to, then saving the result as an image or a set of images.
